Pressure-treated wood
A familiar, natural-looking choice. Expect periodic cleaning and a suitable protective finish. Wood can move as it dries, so detailing and maintenance matter as much as the initial appearance.
Cedar
Worth considering when you like a distinctive grain and a softer, natural finish. Decide whether you want to maintain the original color or let the surface weather; those are different upkeep commitments.
Ipe
A dense hardwood with a rich appearance. Keeping that color generally calls for regular care; allowing it to weather produces a different look. Compare the installed cost and maintenance, not just the sample board.

How much maintenance does a wood deck need?
It depends on the wood, exposure and desired finish. Plan for cleaning and periodic inspection, and follow the chosen finish manufacturer's guidance for reapplication. A shaded deck and a full-sun deck may need different care.
Should I choose wood or low-maintenance decking?
Wood suits people who value a natural material and are comfortable caring for it. PVC or composite may suit you better if reducing refinishing is a priority. Compare initial cost, surface feel and ongoing care together.
Can a new deck include room for a future roof?
Bring that up before the design is settled. Roof loads, posts and foundations need to be considered from the beginning; do not assume a frame designed only for an uncovered deck will support a roof later.
